Exam Guides: ACCA SBR, ACCA FR and DipIFR

Most IFRS study resources teach you the standards. Far fewer tell you how a specific exam actually tests them — which standards dominate the paper, how the questions are structured, and where candidates lose marks they should have banked. That is the gap this section fills.

Each exam guide here is built around the official syllabus and examinable documents for that qualification, and around the patterns visible in recent examiner reports. The guides do not replace a tuition provider or official ACCA resources; they sit alongside them, connecting what the exam demands to the free standard-by-standard study guides, practice questions and tools already on this site.

AccountingTutorAI is an independent study resource. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, ACCA or the IFRS Foundation. All content is written by the AccountingTutorAI team and reviewed by a qualified CPA.

    ACCA Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)

SBR is the Strategic Professional corporate reporting exam — the paper where IFRS knowledge stops being enough on its own and application, judgement and ethics take over. Our three SBR guides cover the full preparation journey: what to study each week, how to write answers that score, and exactly which IFRS Accounting Standards sit on the current examinable list.

    SBR Study Plan

A week-by-week revision timetable in two versions — a full 12-week plan and a compressed 6-week plan — mapping every examinable topic to specific weeks, with links to the matching free study guide for each standard and clear guidance on when to switch from learning to timed question practice.

    SBR Exam Technique

How the exam is structured, how many minutes each mark is worth, a four-step answer framework, spreadsheet-question technique, how professional skills marks work, and a worked before-and-after answer extract showing the difference between a passing and a failing style.

    IFRS Standards in SBR

The complete list of standards and other documents on the current SBR examinable documents list, grouped by theme, with one line on why each matters and a link to our full study guide where one exists — plus a clear view of where to focus first.

    ACCA Financial Reporting (FR)

    Coming soon

FR is the Applied Skills financial reporting exam that most students sit before SBR. Dedicated FR guides — a study plan, exam technique and an examinable-standards map — are in production. In the meantime, the underlying accounting is already covered: our free study guides explain the core IFRS Accounting Standards that FR draws on, from revenue and leases to group accounting.

    Diploma in IFRS (DipIFR)

    Coming soon

DipIFR is ACCA’s standalone IFRS qualification, popular with experienced accountants converting from national GAAP. DipIFR guides following the same format are in production. Until they arrive, the standard-by-standard study guides, practice questions and decision trees on this site cover the IFRS Accounting Standards at the heart of the diploma.

Pair the guides with the rest of the site

The exam guides tell you what to study and how to answer. The rest of AccountingTutorAI is where the actual practice happens:

    • Free study guides — in-depth guides to the major IFRS Accounting Standards, written in plain language with worked examples. Every standard mentioned in the exam guides links to its full guide where one exists.
    • AI tutor — ask follow-up questions about any standard in plain English and get explanations grounded in licensed IFRS content, available whenever you get stuck mid-revision.
    • Practice questions — multiple-choice quizzes for every standard, drawn from large question banks, so repeat attempts keep testing you on fresh questions.
    • Decision trees — step-by-step flowcharts for judgement-heavy areas such as lease classification, control assessment and impairment, mirroring the decision points exam scenarios are built on.
    • Calculators and the journal entry generator — tools for checking your own numbers on lease liabilities, impairments, deferred tax and more, plus a generator that shows the double entry for a described transaction.
    • Progress tracking — quiz scores and study progress in one dashboard, so a revision timetable from the study plan turns into something you can actually measure.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are the exam guides free?

Yes. Every exam guide on this site is free to read in full, with no sign-up required. Some of the practice tools they link to — such as the AI tutor and the full question banks — are part of the Pro plan, but the guides themselves are not paywalled.

Do these guides replace a tuition provider or official ACCA materials?

No. They are a structured companion, not a replacement. You should still work from the official ACCA syllabus, examinable documents and past exam resources, and a tuition provider if you use one. Our guides organise that preparation and connect it to free study materials for each standard.

How up to date are the exam guides?

Each guide is written against the current official syllabus and examinable documents for its exam and reviewed when ACCA publishes updates. Every page shows its last-updated date, and sitting-specific details are kept in one clearly marked spot on each page so they are easy to verify.

When will the FR and DipIFR guides be available?

They are in production and will follow the same three-part format as the SBR guides: a study plan, an exam technique guide and an examinable-standards map. Until then, the free study guides already cover the IFRS Accounting Standards those exams are built on.

How do the exam guides differ from the standards guides?

The standards guides teach the accounting: recognition, measurement, disclosure and worked examples for a single IFRS standard. The exam guides are about a specific exam: which standards it tests, how its questions are structured, and how to plan revision and write answers for that format. They are designed to be used together.
